Customize.org http://customize.org/browse/latest had experienced a run of malware and spam a couple of months ago (just like dA) and to deal with it, they installed a virus scanner and blocked uploads for awhile so that the moderators could clean up the site.

The scanner is not perfect, but they are trying to find a better solution - so you still have to be careful in what you download. For some reason, it reads all windowblinds as infected, but my contact there is working to correct that.

But the best news is, that the block has been turned off and the site is open again to upload all your skins!

If you see any problems there with spam or malware, give me a shout at http://customize.org/karmat or https://www.wincustomize.com/users/2687090/karmat and I'll look into it. The site allows moderators alot more freedom to deal with issues than dA does. Now get uploading!

Somebody should get in touch with McAfee about their giving the site a red rating. McAfee tested 204 downloads and found four to be dangerous. A fair number of people use McAfee Site Advisor, and will stay away. If you go to this page, there is a place where the site owners can explain the situation, get retested, and get a green rating. Also, users of the site can comment, which does influence the rating.

I would like to know how McAfee conducts their test or determines its rating. I noticed there are only 2 user reviews. The site had some bad uploads of xp themes awhile ago and that is why uploads had been disabled while we had a chance to clean things up. There should be an approval system in place soon if its not already which will help to deal with this.

Perhaps Mcafee did their test during this time of bad xp uploads. I realize the site is still not perfect but we are doing our best with active moderation. I know we still have a problem with spam and I have personally gave suggestions to stop that too.

On a side note to everyone visiting the site never download something with an external link and if anyone finds a submission there with an external download link let me know and I will delete it immediately.

Hm. I used to have an account there.. Can't find it now. Member search gives me everything, just not the ones I search for.

I had also noticed that member search is broke so I will try to deal with that. As far as your account goes let me know your user name if its different then here and I will see what I can do.

Never mind, here it is http://customize.org/c242

Don't you ever worry about that Ross. Trying to make you sane would be an impossible task, so you can relax and go join.

Dave--they have an automated system that crawls the web, joins the site if possible, sees how many e-mails the site sends out, checks a few downloads, sees if the site attacks and alters your browser, etc.

Check the "Detailed Analysis" to see the files it considers harmful:

RED

startbarfader3-11.exe

HUD.Vision_by_Jiri_Mahel-v2.2.exe download analysis--

HUD.Vision_by_Jiri_Mahel-v2.0.exe

YELLOW

Dark_Rainmeter.zip

Vista_Ultimate.zip

I noticed that "Generic Trojan" is indicated, which makes me think that it's a false positive; for instance, Norton 2010 antivirus calls the Silica DesktopX widgets dangerous even though they are not. Sometimes it is behaviour of a file, not because it contains a known problem.

In any case, there is a section where the webmaster can make a comment.

Nobody from McAfee comments; that section is for users to make comments. They have a system where if the commenter is "correct" or not, they get rated, and their comments can be "trusted" or not. I'd recommend that the webmaster comments, and some of your users. You can get them to retest it, explain the likelihood of false positives (if that's the case), and get a green rating.

Even WinCustomize had a red rating until someone did something about it.

Which in turn gave Winstep.net a red rating because it links to WinCustomize. Grrr! lol

This is off topic (and I promise not to tell anyone), but it looks like a Canadian Conspiracy to take over customize.org. Is there any truth in that?
